Shadrack The Elephant

In May 2008 I photographed a seven member expedition re-tracing the steps of bull elephant known as “Shadrack.” Traveling by day and night, Shadrack crossed lava flows and deserts to reach lush and fertile mountain forests some 170 kilometers away. Shadrack’s sprint across the desert led to the discovery of what is believed to be the longest known elephant corridor in existence today.

Taking a cue from Shadrack, the expedition traveled at night, using a full moon to escape the extreme heat as they crossed the Kaisut desert. This project was funded by Save the Elephants and the National Geographic Society.
